The presence of thermal waters in Montecatini was known since Roman times.

The area was popular as a battleground but was unhealthy because it was full of quagmires, ponds and malaria. The area was restored and Tito Livio already talks about it when he tells of the passage of Hannibal.

Later in the history, in the 15th century, the doctor Ugolino from Montecatini wrote about the healing power of the waters.

From 1530 onwards it was the Medici family who possessed the area until, when the power passed to the Lorraine, Pietro Leopoldo took care of reclaiming the area and expanding the Tettuccio spas, which were rebuilt under his government to become the colossal look they have today.

The second housekeeper who gave prestige to the locality was Mussolini, who commissioned the architect Ugo Giovannozzi to restore and enlarge it, this was about 1920.

But rather than telling the history, it's worth diving in the water!

The pools are powered by waters of different springs and each with different healing properties.

It is possible to carry out the hydropinic treatment which consists precisely in drinking thermal water.
Hot water causes vomiting, actually! Slow down!

What you can do here in summer is both thermal and beauty treatments, in fact the roof thermal baths are a spa establishment complete, there are also restaurant and event rooms. There are both indoor and outdoor pools.
The gardens are spectacular and I found a reproduction of the Tacca wild boar!

Thermal waters also feed other establishments. There are 10 spa in total, some in recent years under restoration, such as the Leopoldine thermal baths, which take their name from the bovementioned Grand Duke.

Some spas are immersed in the greenery of the municipal park where it is pleasant to ride a bike during the summer. Like today.

If you want to come with me to visit the spa and have an aperitif in the shadow of the travertine colonnade, surrounded by the sound of the water, you can contact us, we will be happy to organize for you.
We also organize a day trip, three towns in one day, you can read more on the excursions page day trips.

See you soon!
